GRADES 1-8

Cedar Hill ISD offers CREDIT BY EXAM during the summer for students in grades 1-8 who wish to test out of a grade level or in grades 7-8 who wish to make up a failed class. In order to be eligible for advanced placement testing next summer, a Request for Acceleration Application must be completed and returned to the child's teacher or counselor by May 14, 2010 for grades 1-8.

Please plan a conference with your child's teacher to provide you with additional information in making your decision to request testing.  Skipping a grade is a major change in a child's life that will impact him or her for many years to come.  It is important to use all available sources of information when considering advanced placement.  Information for grades K-8 may be obtained form the individual campus counselors.

NOTE:  Information for grades 9-12 may be obtained from the Cedar Hill High School website or by contacting the high school counseling office.

A student attempting to make up a failed class in grades 7 or 8 must make 70% on any exam for a class that the student will be repeating.  Please contact your child's teacher for information regarding your child's performance in comparison to other students in that grade level.

KINDERGARTEN

Cedar Hill ISD offers CREDIT BY EXAM during the first week of September for kindergarten students who wish to test out of kindergarten and advance to first grade.  In order to be eligible for the fall testing, a kindergarten student must be enrolled at CHISD and complete a Request for Kindergarten Acceleration by the end of the first week of school.

At the parent's request, kindergarten students who meet the application deadline may participate in additional screening available on each campus prior to taking the CBE.  This would include administering the DRA to establish the child's reading level based on grade level comparisons as well as an informal reading assessment to gain knowledge of reading ability, fluency and comprehension.  Research shows that determining a child's reading level (FRUSTRATION - LEARNING - INDEPENDENT) is vital in predicting future success when considering acceleration.  Although these tests are not mandatory for CBE eligibility, the information gained would greatly benefit parents as they determine readiness and maturity levels of their children.  More information may be obtained by contacting your elementary school counselor or the Research and Assessment Department at 972-291-1581, ext. 4056.
