Health and Physical Education Department

CHISD HPE Department Mission

The mission of the Cedar Hill HPE Department is to create in our students the desire and ability to achieve a lifestyle in which regular exercise and healthy choices become an integral part.  This will be accomplished with an innovative, dynamic and vertically consistent curriculum that offers a wide variety of learning opportunities for our students.

Texas Legislation and Physical Education

In June 2007, the Legislature passed Senate Bill 530, an unfunded state mandate, requiring every school district to administer a fitness test to students in grades 3-12.  The Fitnessgram Test developed by the Cooper Aerobic Center in Dallas was selected by TEA to be the state fitness instrument.  The Cedar Hill ISD Physical Education Department will be administering the Fitnessgram as part of the District's assessment calendar beginning in February, 2009.  Additionally, SB 530 requires all students in grades K-5 to participate in moderate to vigorous daily physical activity for at least 30 minutes or 135 minutes during each school week.  Students in grades 6-8 are required to participate in moderate to vigorous daily physical activity for at least 30 minutes for at least four semesters during those grade levels as part of the district's physical education curriculum.  Currently, all CHISD campuses are in compliance with these requirements.

Another unfunded state mandate, Senate Bill 42, requires the implementation of a coordinated school health program for elementary, middle, and junior high school students.  SB 42 requires that each district shall participate in appropriate training for the implementation of the program approved by the agency and implement the program in each elementary school, middle school, and junior high school in the district.  CHISD has selected the CATCH program and created teams on every elementary, intermediate, and middle school campus that are responsible for implementing the curriculum and creating environments on their campuses that emphasize the importance of proper nutrition and exercise.

Texas Legislation and Health Education

House Bill 2176 requires that public schools use the parenting and paternity awareness curriculum (P.A.P.A) developed by the State Board of Education in conjunction with the Office of the Attorney General beginning in the 2008-2009 school year.  This curriculum will be taught in all ninth grade center and high school health classes.  The lessons will address parenting skills and responsibilities including child support and other legal rights and responsibilities that come with parenthood.  The curriculum also addresses relationship skills, including money management, communication skills and marriage preparation.
